Social gaming, like Farmville on Facebook and other applications adults and kids play, tends to happen on phones more than dedicated consoles but it's growing quickly.

Two things spring to mind about this. First, with game site Gamastura quoting analysts claiming the social gaming market will reach $1.3bn this year, everyone's bound to want to be in it. Second, the only real upgrade to the Nintendo in the new console is a bigger screen, so yes, they'd better do something to make it look a bit interesting.
Continue reading Nintendo looks to social gaming

Nintendo looks to social gaming originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 15:04:00 EST. What's happening is that Microsoft has announced that the next version of Internet Explorer, its market leading Internet browser, won't work with its last-but-one version of Windows, Windows XP.

All of which sounds reasonable enough until you consider how many Microsoft customers decided not to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista when it came out, as the replacement system was widely regarded as a bit of a dog's breakfast. So in practice this is going to mean upgrading to Windows 7, like now, if you want the new IE to work.
Continue reading Microsoft: no IE9 for XP

Microsoft: no IE9 for XP originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 14:44:00 EST.
Called Send Money for iPhone, version 2.0, it allows two iPhone users to "bump" phones to exchange cash and using a function called "split cheque" you can split the cost of a restaurant bill really easily.

Continue reading Paypal goes mobile with phones

Paypal goes mobile with phones originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 12:58:00 EST. There had been - and no doubt will be - a lot of controversy over the provision to cut people off.

It should be interesting to watch the test cases as someone is bound to infringe and upload music or video they don't own, and then claim - as some authorities are already stating - that the Internet is a fundamental human right therefore they can't be chucked off. It's drivel of course, but someone will try it.
Continue reading Internet piracy: music companies win

Internet piracy: music companies win originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 05:46:00 EST.
This is no doubt why there's such a perceived opportunity for the new service, @anywhere, which allows people to embed Twitter onto their website. So you can follow a journalist straight from their column (anyone wanting to follow me is welcome, although you might feel three blog entries a day is all you want, thanks), authors from their books, whatever. But why would you?
Continue reading Twitter embeds in Web

Twitter embeds in Web originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 05:36:00 EST. Essentially it's sold 135,000 units. Day 74 is significant because that's when Apple reached the 1m mark with the iPhone.

Numerous commentators are saying that if you think this means the phone hasn't performed well, you haven't understood the market. I have a slightly different take: if you think selling 13.5% of the volume your nearest competitor has achieved is a success, you have serious numeracy issues.
Continue reading Nexus One not a flop?

Nexus One not a flop? originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 05:16:00 EST. In that case it's unfortunate but at the moment you might be having to make some people redundant (we are not going to use euphemisms like "let people go"). You need to be careful how you do it though, as the handling of this difficult issue is leading to reputation damage for a number of companies.

The reason is that people made redundant are telling ten or more people about how it went, which is their right. Social networks like Twitter and Facebook make it even easier to get word around about how well or badly someone has been treated on their way out.
Continue reading Small biz warned on redundancy

Small biz warned on redundancy originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 14:26:00 EST. Its plan to scrap the 50p Broadband Tax could deprive remote regions of the Internet and that, says research company Point Topic, is where the votes that win or lose the election will be coming from.

This isn't a party political blog by any means, and readers will draw their own conclusion. Personally I laughed like a drain at first, but then came to consider it a little more carefully: isn't it a sign that someone's being fair minded when they push for a policy that's actually going to go against their best interests?
Continue reading Tories: high speed away from voters?

Tories: high speed away from voters? originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 14:13:00 EST. It has filed a complaint against Toshiba, Hitachi, Hannstar, Sharp and Seiko in the US District Court in San Francisco. It's far from the only company to sue for this sort of thing; Nokia and US phone manufacturer AT&T have also alleged the same against other companies for the screens they use for their phones.

It would be wrong to try to guess how these cases are going to go, and there's often a legalistic hair's breadth between price fixing and market forces determining an actual cost. But it's worth looking at some of the practices that can lead to a perception that prices are being controlled.
Continue reading Dell accuses LCD makers

Dell accuses LCD makers originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 13:42:00 EST. The world's biggest superpower has decided that with 100m of its population (around a third) with no broadband it's time to do something about it.

Only they've no idea how to pay for it. No, I'm not making it up. The intention has been announced but nobody has said anything about how this is going to be divided between private funds and tax dollars.
Continue reading America plans universal broadband

America plans universal broadband originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 12:42:00 EST. It'll be different to other online gaming systems because it'll happen through the computer's browser, so there are no downloads and no need to buy extra hardware.

OK. And as long as it'll play DVDs and my existing games and transfer itself from my computer to my living room (I work at the computer and relax in the living room, OK?) I'll happily bin the consoles. What? It won't? On the surface this could be interpreted as leading to a long uncertainty for both companies.

In practice it's unlikely to amount to the proverbial hill of beans. Essentially the decision that it should pay £160m to i4i and stop using XML in its software still stands.

The history is long and tangled and it's important to stress that Microsoft has long since taken the offending code out of software it's selling at the moment. But it might prompt people to consider some of the alternatives.
Continue reading Microsoft appeal may cost dear

Microsoft appeal may cost dear originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Sat, 13 Mar 2010 16:17:00 EST. Facebook is considering suing the Daily Mail because of a story that appeared on Wednesday.

The paper had an article by a guy called Mark Williams-Thomas, an ex-policeman. He posed as a teenage girl on a social network and within minutes had someone asking him to perform sexual acts.

Continue reading Facebook considers suing Mail

Facebook considers suing Mail originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Fri, 12 Mar 2010 14:11:00 EST. But there's an elephant in the room - I've degenerated into fluent clichés and it's sounding a bit strained.

The odd thing - to me - is that some businesspeople really think this sort of nonsense is going to get them more work. It's a relief, then, that business generating agency Retriever has researched and proved that while 54% of companies resort to jargon to win pitches, it puts 62% of directors right off.
Continue reading Buzzwords fail to deliver business

Buzzwords fail to deliver business originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Fri, 12 Mar 2010 13:40:00 EST. This may change: analysts from US firm Strategic Analytics are saying it's going to have more staying power.

They're missing a load of points in the Wii's favour, and assuming that there'll be no PS4 for a while, but their projections are impressive. PS3 sales will reach 127 million against a total of 103 million for Wii, they're saying, because it's going to be around a lot longer.
Continue reading Playstation 3 - tortoise to the Wii?

Playstation 3 - tortoise to the Wii? originally appeared on Daily Finance UK on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 08:58:00 EST.
